I have a friend whose husband just underwent brain surgery because of bleeding in the brain. He is home now, but he can not sleep. Is this normal after brain surgery or should he go back to the doctor?

I can not tell you that it is normal. I can only tell you that I experienced the same problem after my surgery. If it goes on for a long period of time I would suggest asking his doctor. I can tell you that a doctor will not reccomend medication for sleep. If he takes something for sleep and no one can wake him up then you could possibly end up going to the ER. It took about six months after my surgery befor my doctor finally gave me a medication for sleep.
