I am 32 yrs old and I just found out I have a small menningioma 1.2 cm and I suffer from horrible headaches.  I am on daily med's which help but I am torn with the idea of surgery.  My father stroked 6 yrs ago so I am worried about long term. The surgeon said he believes he can removed it with little neurological damage but is this possible?? What is the size that others have measured when they were removed?

Just to let you know.  I am 53 years old and last September I had a tumor removed from my brain that was the size of a grapefruit.  I passed out after my son's ballgame and they could not do surgery on me until a week later because the benign tumor had attached itself to my brain and blood was feeding it and causing swelling.  I had no symptoms to mention with the exception of headaches which I'v had all my life and some memory loss which I put it off to the aging process.  God was good to me. Though the surgery lasted over 6 hours and had to have 2 pints of blood and can say I've had no damage from the tumor with exception of times of short memory loss but I get it back.  While yours is still small I would consider having the surgery before it gets as big as mine.

My father has a meningioma.  Anyway, about two years ago his meningioma was about the size of an orange. He had no symptoms, but one day he had a seizure, which is how they found it. They removed most of it with surgery. He was 63 at the time. He has had no side effects from the surgery. He recovered very well and very fast. It was as if he never had a tumor at all. Well, two years later, it has grown back, currently it is 1cm X2cm. There is also a second one they found today that is not operable, the second one is about the size of a pin head. I am hoping the second one wont grow. But I do feel that the first one is growing rather fast. They are going to continue to monitor him over the next few months and if it keeps growing they are going to try radiation.
I would say go for the surgery. Even though it might grow back, at least they can try to keep it under control. You dont want it to get so big that is causes complications. I think my father is very lucky that he had the surgery, look how much bigger it would have gotten had he not. The doctor said it could have caused a stroke had he not found it.

Good luck to you. May you live a long, healthy life.

My husband had a meng. tumor the size of a large egg, top of his head, did not have any sympthoms, until he passed out in front of me, hit the concrete floor in our garage-2008-Dec. I thought it was a heart attack. He had surgery in Feb. 2009, has a scar about 12" long, surgery went very well, in the hospital 5 days, has done just wonderful. GOD is great, his outlook was very good and he is still going very good, only gets very tired, very easy. He is 62. Had surgery in Floyd Hospital, Rome GA. Goes for MRI once a year for 5 years. Don't be afraid, the Dr. said they do not know how long his had been there, but it had started to grow, just trust the Lord and your doctor.

I had my 5.6 cm meningioma removed 2 weeks ago.  I'm fine, other than being anemic from losing a lot of blood during surgery.  No side effects and no pain.  I am not a doctor, but I would recommend removing your tumor ASAP (either by surgery or gamma knife, whatever your doctor thinks) before it gets bigger and more vascularized and starts causing problems for you.

if anything and everything about you is right, the doctor knows it, he will suggest the best way to treat it in. but yes, always go for a second opinion, even a third. just to clear your head of any doubts about it. good luck with it, and i hope your decision is right enough for you and your family.

Check with your doctors but if it's helpful...

I had a +- 4 cm frontal lobe meningioma. Discovered after an epileptic seizure. Had no complaints or other symptoms. Even no headaches.

Had surgery done in feb. (Operation of +- 14h) They succeeded in a full removal of the tumor (complete ressection), and did also surgery on my sinus frontalis, and although I have lost taste and smell I am feeling very well. I am restarting work & sport very soon, I am not epileptic, had some troubles with memory but it came back and goes better and better.

If radical surgery (= complete removal) with little damage is possible take this option seriously even if you are afraid of the procedure. Certainly if the tumor is still small, but only your doctors can give you correct advice on this.

But there is life after removal of a meningioma. I know several "survivors" and although most have some little 'damage', a lot of them are living a very happy life!
