I hope I can be a little bit of bright light for those of you suffering with an AVM. I suffered an AVM hemorrhage when I was nine years old. That was in 1990, when medical technology was not that great. The artery burst, leaving me without the use of my left hand and with other minor problems, such as a left visual field cut. Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot make something of your life. I also have epilepsy, which is now controlled. I was in a coma during the surgery, so I have no recollection of its removal. To make a long story short, I recovered to the best of my ability. I put myself through college. I got married three years ago, and now have a one year-old son. The pregnancy was not easy, but I did very well. I had a perfectly natural labor, no drugs or anything.
My advice to you is to go to a neurologist if you suspect you may have an AVM. I had absolutely no idea I had one before it ruptured. If we had known, it may have minimized the damage, but I'm grateful things turned out like they did. I had lots of therapy, but I did regain a lot. I'd love to help anyone who is struggling with an avm. If you need someone to talk to about it, email me at
